This border is used as a route for smuggling livestock, food items, medicines and drugs from India to Bangladesh. Also, illegal immigrants crosses the border to make their way into India. Some of them are attracted to Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Delhi and Mumbai and even Pakistan and the Middle East, while others have chosen to stay in West Bengal.

Fencing the India Bangladesh Border

India had started erection of a fence all along the 4,096-km India Bangladesh border several years back to check trans-border movement of militants in West Bengal, Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram and Tripura. Floodlights are also being installed alongwith fencing to prevent infiltration and cross-border crimes.

Out of 4,096-km border that India shares with Bangladesh, West Bengla alone covers 2,216 km. But it is along the 1,145-km border in the southern part of the State that most of the immigration (documented and illegal) from Bangladesh takes place. The fencing that was started a few years ago barely covers 530 km of this crucial border.
